Description
Diverse group of semi-terrestrial and arboreal passerines comprising bulbuls, greenbuls and brownbuls.
They have thin downcurved bills, short wings and a medium to long tail. Bulbuls have crests on their heads. Usually a drab brown, olive or grey in colour. Some species have patches of red, yellow, green or white. The males are slighly larger than the females. Flight is fairly rapid and fluttering.
They primarily eat insects and fruit, but also nectar. When foraging in trees, bulbuls may hang upside down to get to ripe fruit.
Monogamous and territorial, nests a cup built by the female and placed in a fork or slung between twigs in sapling or tree. Clutch is 2 - 3 variably marked eggs, usually with profuse speckling or blotching.
The chicks are altricial (underdeveloped at the time of birth) Both sexes feed the young. Bulbul and sombre greenbul are parasitised by Jacobin cuckoo.
