Description
Medium-sixed gamebirds, endemic to Africa, with head and neck mostly naked. They have a brighly coloured crown, feathered or with a bony casque. The bill is short, arched and chicken-like, the body is stout, wings are short and rounded. They can fly short distances in a strong fast flight, often landing in a tree. They forage on the ground, but ususally roost in trees.
They are extremely gregarious, especially when not breeding and make small local movements in responds to food supplies.They are onmivorous, eating all kinds of plant material but also small invertebrates.
Helmeted guineafowls tend to settle their differences by means of endurance, chasing each other in hot pursuit.
During courtship, the male feeds the female. The female builds a scrape-like nests on the ground and takes care of incubation. rearing of the chicks is done by both parents. Adults attack intruders, even if they are much larger than themselves.
