Kites Information page
Description
Small to medium-sized, long-winged, graceful raptors. Black-shouldered kites hunt mainly by perch-hunting and hovering, primarily taking rodents. Black kite and yellow-billed kite forage mainly by scavenging from low soaring flight or loitering around food sources (e.g. termite emergence, pig and chicken farms, rubbish dumps, bush fires). All kites will regurgitate pellets of indigestible material.
They sunbathe on the ground with the wings spread and tails fanned. When not breeding, they may occur in flocks.
They are monogamous and occasionally polyandrous.
