Parrots, parakeets and lovebirds Information page
Description
Familiar, colourful, strong-beaked frugivorous and granivorous birds. Extremely noisy with cacophonous screeching and squawking. The powerful, hooked bill is adapted for ripping the exocarp of tough nuts and fruits.
Parrots feed mainly on fruits in the canopy of trees (as opposed to lovebirds that mainly feed on seeds on the ground).
Their flight is rapid and can be highly erratic and manouverable. They use their feet and bill fot clambering on tree trunks.
The large muscular tongue allows songs and voice manipulation, enabling 'talking'. Some are accomplished mimics.
They are monogamous, nesting usually in tree cavities or cliff faces, laying 3 - 5 white eggs.
