Pelicans Information page

Description
Huge, gregarious, ponderous fish-eating waterbirds with expandable pouches below the mandibles. The pouch is often excercised and it is used for catching food. They feed mainly on fish, but will take any vertebrate they are able to overpower, including large adult waterbirds.
They are good swimmers and they also fly well, they can soar on thermals looking for water bodies, as they rely on water-sources for food supply.
They are monogamous, colonial breeders, nesting either on the ground, on a shallow platform (great white), or building a structure in trees (pink-backed). Colonies are scarce, localised an vulnerable to disturbances. They lay and incubate two with egss, but obligate siblicide results in the smaller chick being pecked to death. Both adults feed the young, adults may travel up to 200 km to provide provision. For the first two weeks, the chick is fed by regurgitation and thereafter the chick will delve into the adult's throat for more solid food.
