Shanks and sandpipers Information page

Description
A diverse group of small to medium-sized waders. Identification of these species is often challenging.
They feed mainly on onvertebrates or small vertebrates by probing substrates adjacent to or within water. Some plant material such as seeds and algae are also eaten. The bill is packed with chemo receptors and tactile sensors, indicating that they detect prey mainly by touch and smell. Sight is also used for choosing potential sites and for pecking items from the water.
