Description
Bold conspicuous and pugnacious (quarrelsome) passerines of drier savannas and woodlands. Still (sit and wait) hunters perching on bushes, shrubs or posts and pounching on insects and anything else they can overpower with their strong hook-tipped bills. They may hawk aerially and glean from vegetation as well. They usually tear large prey with the powerful bill while holding it with the foot. Pellets of indigestible remains are regurgitated.
They may impale prey on thorns or barbed wire apparently using cached prey as a larder. This may serve as food for later consumption, to bait invertebrate prey or to demarcate and advertise an area.
They may sunbathe with spreas wings and tail on the ground and will regularly bathe in foliage or small pools.
Vocalizations are typical unmusical, harsh, grating and rasping notes, but sometimes soft, warbling songs are heard. Usually solitary or in pairs.
Monogamous, nest is usually a bulky cup of grass, fine plant stems etc., clutch is usually 3 - 4 eggs which are beige or ground coloured, overlayed with brown, blakc and grey speckles. Incubation by female alone, chicks are fed by both parents.
