Physiologically, yawning marks the switch from a the sleepy to the awake phase, increasing the alertness.
In social species, like spotted hyaena, yawning can be contagious. The yawning of one group member can trigger reflecive matching yawning in the other group members. This way spotted hyaena scan catch imminent changes in the behaviour of their group members.
